In recent years Oman has embraced tourism whilst still retaining much of its traditional architecture and customs. Oman's coastline stretches for 1,700 kilometres of pristine beaches and in addition to relaxing on the beaches, there is a host of activities on offer including desert safaris, camel racing, wadi-bashing, deep-sea diving, turtle and bird watching, browsing the souks, and visiting ancient forts. The enchanting capital of Muscat is nestled between rugged mountains and the shimmering Arabian Sea and a visit to the traditional old capital town of Nizwa is essential, with the Fort and the famous Nizwa Souk being worthy of particular attention. Oman, said to be the oldest independent state in the Arab world, has a magical appeal and visitors are always assured of a very warm welcome.
